Alan Masaoka was raised in San Francisco, California, and has been working with glass since 1975. He attended the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, and has studied with renowned designers Ludwig Schaffrath and Johannes Schreider, both of whom have heavily influenced Masaoka’s work and overall design sense. Masaoka began his first glass business, Architectural Glass Design, in Seattle in 1975. In 1980 Masaoka moved to the Monterey Peninsula and established Masaoka Glass Design. He moved the studio to its current location in 1998, and has since continued to expand the space into additional glassblowing and workshop space, as well as the Masaoka Design Gallery. Masaoka is known for his unique signature style of contemporary leaded glasswork, incorporating bevels and hand-blown German art glass. His work also includes etched glass, reverse glass painting, kiln cast and fused glass techniques. Alan’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States, including both his art glass pieces and his extensive range of architectural commissions completed for both public and private clients.

In 1973, the seed for Barron Lighting Group was established with the purchase of Barron Manufacturing from Basic Electronics, an engineering company and printed circuit board assembler located in Illinois. Barron was then a contract manufacturer selling its services in Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1984, while meeting with an amusement park customer, they described some frustrations with constantly changing exit sign light bulbs in hard to reach areas and simply stated “electronics is your business, can you come up with a light source that won’t burn out?” It was after that conversation the decision was made to design and manufacture the LED exit sign and the Exitronix brand was born. That amusement park customer was not only instrumental in the idea, but also issued an order for the very first LED exit sign at a cost of $395.00 each. With a passion for lighting, Barron launched its indoor and outdoor lighting division, Trace-Lite, in 2006, providing LED, Induction, Fluorescent and HID lamp solutions for virtually any application. The Specialty LED division followed soon after by offering decorative LED lighting solutions for both indoor and outdoor applications as well as full design capabilities allowing customers to tailor their ideas to meet specific criteria. Service has long been a cornerstone of Barron Lighting Group’s focus. Alan Tracy, President and owner, shared, “Our immediate goals are to innovate by introducing new technologies and focusing on environmentally friendly designs, and above all package them with our core value...Service. Over the next three years, we have well over 100 new products slated for introduction coupled with manufacturing initiatives to streamline time to market and cost saving measures.” Today Barron Lighting Group occupies a 40,000 square foot office and manufacturing plant in Phoenix, Arizona with an additional 110,000 square feet of warehouse space and eleven distribution centers around the United States. Barron also utilizes five manufacturing sites in China, with an operating capacity well in excess of 1 million square feet.

Mid-West Wholesale Lighting Corp. was founded in 1963 by Max Frandzel at the age of 47, a time in most people’s lives when they begin to plan for retirement. Born and raised in Chicago, Max took over his father’s candy business at the age of 18, when his father became ill. Having a great love of music, Max also helped support his family playing the saxophone in “dime-a-dance” halls and nightclubs. He played the clarinet in symphony orchestras, and conducted a military band to entertain veterans. He also enjoyed playing his sax at a local retirement home or just entertaining the troops on special occasions at Mid-West. Max opened Mid-West’s doors in November, 1963, at 601 N. La Brea in Los Angeles. Max ran the business by himself, later getting help from his two sons, Alan and Bob. Fluorescent fixtures and lamps were Max’s basic product lines in the beginning; other lines were added as the company grew. In 1965 they received Halo Lighting’s (now Cooper Lighting) track and recessed line, which helped them become one of the largest independent lighting wholesalers in the nation. In 1975, with about five employees, the company moved to its present location at 5250 Hollywood Blvd. They opened their doors with a complete lighting showroom, stocked and displayed every type of lighting – decorative fixtures and chandeliers, track, recessed, low voltage, ballasts, fluorescent, HID, along with lamps to suit every need. Now with a staff of over 35 people, Mid-West continues to meet and exceed the expectations of their customers and vendors. Their sales people are still regarded as some of the most knowledgeable in the lighting industry. Their lighting events are touted industry-wide as one of the not-to-be-missed lighting shows. In 2010, during an industry deep-recession period, Mid-West Lighting held one of their biggest events right in their own parking lot, displaying new LED products and fixtures from many of their vendors. They also showcased their newest lighting achievement – the Mid-West LED Solution Center. This unique “light lab” is used to display various types of energy-efficient LED fixtures in a controlled environment – one of few like it in the nation. Mid-West continues to be a third-generation, family-owned business. We invite all industry-professionals to come in, say “Hi!” and be a part of the Mid-West “family,” as we approach nearly 50 years in business!
